Row, row, row the boat

Our favorite expression of late is "getting everyone rowing in the same direction". We talk about it at the DLC board meetings; we talk about it with regards to the regional "one-card" project; we talk about it at the district director's meetings.

Michael Kumer, of the Nonprofit Leadership Institute, goes even further and gives the analogy of change and this process as: turning an ocean liner. It can't be turned quickly, but rather slowly with everyone working to turn in the same direction. Two important points to remember: everyone together and it will take time!

So, how do we get everyone together? Well, the Kumer trainings are one way. The goal is changing behaviors through repetition of the "right way". No, I'm not saying your way may be "wrong"; I'm saying "the same way we've always done it" may not be the "best" way. Without trainings on nonprofit leadership, you are doing what you know--you just don't know any better.

One of the main charges for the district center is: library improvement! We take this charge seriously. We want to improve your libraries, improve your boards, improve your management of change and improve your sustainability.

Improving attitudes, well that is up to you.
