Core Values

Last night (June 22) at the board leadership training session, something in particular resonated with me. Michael Kumer talked about Wayne Dyer and his example of "if you squeeze an orange you get orange juice"--"what is inside". Same is true with a person. During moments of stress you get from a person what is inside: their core values.

So what are the "core values" your library should look for in board members?
In times of "stress" how do you want your board members to react?

Some of the words that were brainstormed last night included:
kind, passionate, dedicated, determined, POSITIVE, good listeners, honest, fair, organized, resourceful, creative, role models, team players...I could go on. The list was quite extensive.

So, think about your library's board. During the past year (or so) what stresses have occurred? Budget cuts (statewide), budget cuts (locally), death of a director (2 district libraries have faced that STRESS), potential school district cuts, the transition to a new district center...

Now, think about your board's (or even your) reaction to that stress. What "came out"? Those are the "core values".
